Mr. Alan White is the founder and Director of Global Operations for Overseas Market Development Corporation. He directs the company’s global strategy.
His career began in the retail clothing industry. Starting as a stock boy in a clothing store, he quickly rose to managing stores and sourcing products from global markets for both retail and wholesale distribution. As a result of that early experience, he developed a keen appreciation for and interest in international business.
In 1970, Mr. White started a textile-manufacturing firm, with sales offices in New York City, which made jeans and t-shirts, ultimately selling the business to private investors in 1975. The manufacturing business educated him in a range of disciplines including production, sourcing, purchasing, marketing, importing and exporting. Through his company’s domestic business and exporting, Mr. White gained extensive knowledge in sales processes, payment practices, distribution logistics, and the overall business demands of North American retailers and importers in foreign markets.
Through his international contacts in the export business, new opportunities arose as a sourcing consultant and exclusive U.S. agent for other brands. In a sourcing capacity, he sourced U.S.-made denim, blue jeans, t-shirts, footwear, and American-style sports apparel for leading European fashion brands, including Benetton, Sisley, Jeans West and Fiorucci. Acting as an exclusive U.S. agent, he also sold European jean brands, shirts, footwear, and furniture to North American retailers.
As the U.S. textile industry moved production offshore, Mr. White began developing global markets for other U.S.-based manufacturers in the plumbing, hardware (DIY), sporting goods, computer and industrial machinery sectors. In 1983, Mr. White relocated to Barcelona, Spain. From that base, he served as European Director of Fay & White Marketing for 8 years, providing business development and sourcing services for manufacturers interested in the U.S. and European markets.
In 1992, after Mr. White returned to the U.S., he formed Overseas Market Development Corporation (OMDC), a global business development and international sourcing services firm. Through its international network of partners and associates, the company offers a complete range of business development, sourcing, market research, and ancillary services to companies involved in or interested in the business of global trade.
OMDC operates a number of Internet sites that provide companies with global marketing, foreign business opportunities, market research, international business information and answers to questions regarding cross-border trade. One site is the global trade portal, OMDCnet®.
